If you are planning to choose a new bank, it is extremely important that you consider your choices well before deciding. This is because banks are essential to our finances and our monetary well-being depends a lot on what kind of bank we choose. Once you choose a bank, it is very probable that you will be continuing with it for several years to come. This article will help you choose a bank for yourself that takes care of all your needs.
- First things first. What kind of a bank do you want to go for, a local bank or a national bank? If you are wondering if there is actually any difference, the answer is yes. Each of them has got their own sets of pros and cons. If you want to find a local bank to do business with, you will be happy to see that they have lots of branches in the area where you live. But if you have to travel quite a bit, finding ATM machines of such banks may be very difficult. You may even get charged twice for using another bank’s ATM, once from your own bank and once from the bank whose ATM you are using.
- A local bank has another con that you may have to deal with. If you are a frequent traveller then you will not be able to deposit a check or money in your bank when you are travelling. This is because your local bank will most probably allow you to deposit your checks and money only at their bank’s branches or ATM’s. So you will have to wait to get back home in order to encash your checks or deposit money.
- If you don’t find a local bank and would rather go for a national bank to do business with, you will have the option of choosing from a huge number of ATM’s and branches across the country and even across the world. A national bank is a good idea for those who travel frequently either for business or pleasure.
- Since most people don’t really have to travel too much, a local bank would suffice. Not only will you have a branch near to where you live, it will also be easy for you to drop a check or deposit money whenever you want to.
- Cost of banking is also an important point to consider while choosing a local or national bank. You should give due consideration to the kind of services you are going to get for a certain cost. Most banks have different levels of services such as no-frills, premium and extra-premium. These levels are determined according to the kind of services on offer and what it is going to cost you.
- Choose a bank which has friendly and warm staff. Banking is important and in case you have problems, you will need people to help you out. A bank equipped with helpful staff is always better than one which has better air conditioning.

Just because you choose a local financial institution doesn't mean you are stuck without any access to your funds when you travel.
Most financial institutions have phone centers and online banking solutions that you can access anywhere. And there are many surcharge-free ATMs that give you ready access to your money.
In addition, many credit unions offer a service called Shared Branching. Shared Branching lets you visit a credit union anywhere you travel to make deposits and withdrawals, pay bills, or transfer funds. You can contact your credit union to find a branch in the area you are traveling to, or you can visit http://cuswirl.com to do a quick web search. And, they just released an iPhone app that makes it even easier to find a branch on the go.
Just a little more food for thought to help you make your decision.
